COMMITTEE ON LARGE SECTIONS

CHARGE: As Truman examines various options for instruction within our budget constraints, one option is to select a small number of courses to have a larger enrollment (60-100 students).  In the past, such large classes were discouraged, but many of our peer and aspirant schools have been successful offering a small number of these courses, given proper support and innovation.

This committee should examine the merits of such classes, and look for criteria that such courses would need.  In particular:

  • Can these courses be consistent with our mission and values?
  • What types of courses should never be taught in large sections?
  • What process should be used to target and create large sections? Should UGC oversee it, or should it be left to divisions and disciplines (as it is now)?
  • What support and services would be needed to make large sections work (technology, student workers)?
  • What incentives should be used to encourage disciplines and faculty to re-tool existing courses or create new successful large courses?

TIMELINE: Implementation cannot occur until after Fall 2006 at the earliest.  UGC should expect regular reports, with a final report by its March 2006 meeting.
